This is a specialized victim witness specialist that is responsible for independent work in acting as liaison between a State Attorney’s Office and victims involved in the criminal cases prosecuted by our office.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

• Maintains current information relative to the whereabouts of each victim.
• Meets with victims during the pre-filing stage to assess their needs.
• Acts as a liaison between the State Attorney’s Office and victims involved in criminal cases prosecuted by the Office.
• Explains to victims the purpose of their being subpoenaed and the importance of being available for trial on the date they are to appear.
• Accompanies the victim to deposition and trial to provide emotional support.
• Prepares the victim for trial by familiarizing the victim with courtroom and legal procedures.
• Acts as primary emotional support for victims and provides guidance and assistance during the criminal justice process.
• Assesses need levels of victims and offers community resources.
• Assists victims in accessing Victim Compensation funds. Continuously monitors and keeps the prosecutor informed of the status of the victim emotionally and physically.
• Maintains current information relative to the whereabouts of each victim.
• Is available for victims who need assistance after the prosecution process is completed.
• Works with the Assistant State Attorney in providing information to the victim concerning the status of the prosecution process.
• Notifies the victim of any criminal proceeding and advises them of their right to be present and to be heard.
• Assists victims with victim impact statements and restitution.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited four year college program with major work in the area of Social Science (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work) or Criminal Justice. Victim Services Practitioner Designation or practical experience in Victim Services is preferred.
