The Recreational Sports Director oversees the operations of recreational sports for both youth and adults, as well as summer sports camp programming. This position is responsible for managing full- and part-time staff and creating top-tier programming in alignment with the vision and goals set by the Assistant General Manager of Sports, Fitness & Wellness. This is a full-time, exempt position with a comprehensive benefits package. The Jewish Community Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Preschool and Youth Sports Programs

  • Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate full-time, part-time, and contract coaches and referees.
  • Ensure staff are appropriately trained to work with various age groups while upholding safety, customer service, and professionalism.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate leagues, clinics, and classes for preschoolers, children, and teens.
  • Provide direct oversight for the sports department during school breaks and specialty programs.
  • Lead measurable year-to-year growth through recruitment, retention, and program development.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Department to promote sports programs via print, social media, and digital platforms.
  • Create and manage budgets; submit purchase orders and payment forms promptly.
  • Track program participation, gather feedback, and maintain satisfaction metrics.
  • Stay informed on current trends and standards through conferences and continued education.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to volunteer committees, work with lay leaders, and build relationships with local schools and parents.
  • Maintain consistent communication with families regarding schedules, updates, and events.

Adult Recreation Programs

  • Oversee the planning, scheduling, and execution of adult recreational sports leagues and events (e.g., basketball, pickleball, volleyball, etc.).
  • Recruit, train, and supervise part-time and full-time staff, referees, and volunteers.
  • Monitor league registration, team placement, standings, and overall league operations.
  • Work with the Marketing Department to promote leagues and tournaments to current and potential adult participants.
  • Ensure excellent participant experience and sportsmanship through clear rules, timely communication, and consistent on-site presence.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase adult sports participation.
  • Handle conflict resolution, manage participant concerns, and maintain a positive, inclusive environment.

Sports Camp

  • Provide direct oversight of the summer Sports Camp.
  • Build fun and age-appropriate camper groups, craft dynamic daily schedules, and ensure every day is filled with safe, engaging, and memorable programming.
  • Develop and market camps in collaboration with the Marketing Department.
  • Hire, train, and supervise seasonal staff and ensure a safe, inclusive environment.
  • Oversee and reconcile camp budgets, payments, and operational paperwork.
  • Maintain data on enrollment, feedback, and retention for each program.

Facility and Rentals

  • Assist with the supervision of sports facilities, including Donsky Gym and the field.
  • Use facility maintenance software to report issues and maintenance needs.
  • Recommend capital improvements and space enhancements.
  • Manage schedules and availability through the JCC app; coordinate all rental logistics.
  • Handle payment collection for rentals and report monthly revenue to the CFO.
  • Ensure renters meet JCC policies and expectations.
  • Coordinate facility rentals and ensure all logistical needs are met by JCC policies and standards.

JCC Maccabi Delegation Head

  • Recruit and market to Jewish teens for the JCC Maccabi Games.
  • Plan and conduct tryouts; assemble sport-specific teams.
  • Recruit, manage, and train volunteer coaches.
  • Adhere to all JCC Maccabi Protocols as outlined by JCC Association.
  • Attend Delegation Head Meetings as scheduled.
  • Handle all gear, travel, and registration logistics.
  • Serve as primary contact for families and participants throughout the year.
  • Ensure all participants are fully paid and registered for the JCC Maccabi Games.
  • Be on call during the week of the Games.
  • Attend and supervise all official events during the Games.
  • Develop presentations and materials for pre-Games meetings and planning.
  • Act as a role model for athletes and coaches; oversee transportation and delegate coordination.
  • Ensure the creation of the binder, PowerPoint presentations and transportation schedule of the Delegation and coaches.

Cross-Department Responsibilities:

  • Respond to emergencies and be familiar with JCC crisis protocols.
  • Conduct monthly AED inspections and maintain CPR training records.

EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of management experience in youth programming, sports, camps or related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple long-term projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment, take initiative, and manage complex administrative tasks efficiently.
  • Must be innovative and imaginative, serving as a positive role model for both staff and community members.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • This position requires independent judgment, initiative, and advanced administrative skills.
