The Deseret News seeks a Community Engagement Manager to cultivate and engage an online community across our first-party platforms. This individual will be a bridge between our journalists and audience, fostering healthy interactions and vibrant discussions. This position will work with a group of moderators and will spearhead initiatives to create and maintain engaging community spaces on our website.
You are a good fit if you have:
A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, a related field, or equivalent experience, is preferred. Journalism experience is highly valued.
4-6 years of experience in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to engage effectively across diverse platforms and audiences
Demonstrated experience in online community management or a similar role
An analytical mindset with the capability to leverage data in enhancing community strategies
A keen interest in understanding user behavior
Comfort and experience in management and mentorship
Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays when required
Sound judgment and decision-making skills

You have experience building an online community on social media platforms like Facebook, Reddit or Discord — or better yet, on a news website
You are familiar with community management software, such as user comment platforms, and metrics analysis tools
You have the flexibility to adapt comfortably under shifting deadlines and evolving priorities
You keep up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in audience growth and digital publishing
You habitually consume news from other publications
You’re willing to embrace and promote the voice of the Deseret News
You have a familiarity with the history, heritage, culture and politics of Utah and its surrounding states
Core Responsibilities:
Grow and engage our online community by maintaining and enhancing the website’s comment sections
Develop new strategies for engaging with readership on the website (online Q&As online community events)
Foster healthy interactions among community members
Bridge the gap between our journalists and audience by facilitating interaction and dialogue
Make decisions and give direction based on our standards and guidelines
Day-to-Day Tasks:
Oversee the company’s moderation processes and participating directly in moderation activities, ensuring community guidelines are upheld
Highlight and promote comments that embody the Deseret News brand and community ideals and engage directly with commenters
Collaborate with editorial staff to involve journalists in ongoing and potential discussions in the comments, aligning conversations with upcoming publications
Provide customer service to community members, addressing inquiries and resolving issues
Offer feedback and direction on decision-making and the application of our standards and guidelines
Analyze community-driven metrics to assess community health and engagement, and develop strategic initiatives to enhance overall community participation
