Aviation Unit

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Aviation Section consists of 11 uniformed flight crew personnel members, 3 helicopters, and 13 airplanes. Nearly every aviation service performed by Patrol pilots is available to other law enforcement agencies. For traffic enforcement, search assistance, aerial photography, evidence relays, or marijuana eradication, the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Aviation Section is a tremendous asset to law enforcement throughout the state.

Job Description

Report In Location: 2829 W. Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus, 43235

Work Hours: 8:00am to 5:00pm; Working hours will include nights, weekends & holidays based on operational need; may be on call 24 hrs., 7 days per week

What you will do as a Highway Patrol Aviation Flight Instructor

Develop, coordinate, implement & instruct training courses & programs designed to prepare law enforcement officers for operation of fixed-wing &/or rotary-wing aircraft, assist current division pilots with maintaining or developing their proficiency level & to formulate & implement training program plans, policies & procedures:

  • Provides initial ground & flight instruction to division personnel enrolled in the flight training program; Provides advanced initial & recurrent ground & flight instruction to current division pilots;
  • Provides Tactical Flight Officers with an adequate level of training in order to bring a safe resolution to the aircraft & occupants in the event of incapacitation of the pilot;
  • Coordinates flight schedules with trainees & plans & conducts all weather training flights; Conducts check flights with flight crews during active missions to ensure compliance with SOPs;
  • Develops & conducts assessments in order to evaluate student performance for certification; Records & maintains assessment results, training & professional development records & training activities;
  • Properly prepares & approves trainees for the Federal Aviation Administration Private, Instrument, Commercial & Airline Transport Pilot (i.e., ATP) check rides in the categories of airplane single engine land &/or rotorcraft helicopter;
  • Develops & implements plans, policies & standard operating procedures (SOPs) for aviation training programs; Interprets state & federal regulations & makes recommendations to internal policies & procedures;
  • Creates &/or revises syllabus, lesson plans & training materials to be used for all levels of skill & experience; Ensures all training courses are conducted in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (i.e., FAA) Regulations, applicable codes & laws & OSHP operating procedures to include the Safety Management System;
  • Evaluates long term training needs & makes recommendations as to resources, supplies & equipment needed to conduct trainings; Recommends inclusion of additional classes, programs &/or certifications;
  • Coordinates with contracted outside training vendors on the training requirements & standards of the associated course;
  • Plans & conducts all weather transportation flights & general utility flights as pilot-in-command or second-in-command &/or serves as pilot-in-command or second-in-command for maintenance & mission equipment check flights, maintenance & mission relay flights, reposition flights &/or passenger flights, which may contain secured ammunition &/or firearms;
  • Makes decisions using discriminating judgement & analysis & provides quick responses to rapidly changing dynamic weather conditions &/or aircraft abnormal conditions to include thunderstorms, lightning & or trainee input;
  • Devises in-flight solutions to include alternate airport selection, alternate flight profile selection, alternate altitude & mission profile;
  • Serves as a flight crew member on a variety of flights conducted by the OSHP Aviation Section which does not require sworn personnel;
  • Conducts routine currency, check & training flights with current flight crews to include but not limited to flight reviews, instrument proficiency checks, night vision goggle initial & proficiency checks, pilot-in-command & second-in-command proficiency checks & tactical flight officer proficiency checks;
  • Conducts pre & post maintenance check flights & training flights;
  • Maintains aircraft manuals & all related flight publications connected to operation & safety of all aircraft;
  • Prepares & presents a wide variety of training material to both internal & external personnel (i.e., Law Enforcement Aviation groups) at joint training events;
  • Attends & successfully completes annual recurrent training to include flight instructor courses; maintains & demonstrates subject matter expertise in aviation practices, aviation training & proficiency in the use of equipment &/or aircraft;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  1. FAA Airplane Single Engine Land Commercial Certificate with instrument rating
  2. FAA Airplane Single Engine Land Flight Instructor's Certificate with instrument rating
  3. TSA Security Awareness Training Certificate
  4. FAA Part 107 Certificate
  5. Current FAA Second class medical certificate
  6. Current Flight Review
  7. 2 yrs. exp. as a flight instructor
  8. Minimum of 1,500 hours of total flight time
  9. Minimum 500 hours of flight instruction given with a minimum of 250 flight hours of fixed-wing aircraft instruction.

For rotary-wing Flight Instructor positions:

  1. FAA Rotorcraft Helicopter Commercial Certificate with instrument rating
  2. FAA Rotorcraft Helicopter Flight Instructor's Certificate with instrument rating
  3. TSA Security Awareness Training Certificate
  4. FAA Part 107 Certificate
  5. Current FAA Second class medical certificate
  6. Current Flight Review
  7. 2 yrs. exp. as a flight instructor
  8. Minimum of 1,500 hours of total flight time
  9. Minimum 500 hours of flight instruction given with a minimum of 250 flight hours of rotary-wing aircraft instruction.
