Job Description

Description Summary: The Employee Health Nurse functions as a health team member supporting the objectives of Employee Health Services, focusing on prevention, early detection of illness, management of health risks, and chronic conditions. Completes pre-employment and annual assessments, assists with Worker’s Compensation patients, screens employees for illnesses, communicable diseases and injuries, supports the Hospital’s Employee Health wellness programs, and provides other nursing services. Works under the supervision of a nurse practitioner and/or physician. Responsibilities: Provides treatment for job-related and not job-related injuries and illnesses. Initiates and tests for exposures to blood borne pathogens, body fluids and infectious diseases using established protocols. Provides management and follow up care as appropriate. Completes pre-employment and annual health screenings. Evaluates laboratory results and provides appropriate notification. Checks vital signs, administers immunizations, blood tests, and urine drug screens. Delivers nursing services such as mass flu vaccinations, TB skin testing, T-dap injections and Respiratory Fit testing as needed. Supports the medical surveillance program and associated medical records. Orders laboratory tests, x-ray studies and other diagnostic services, as necessary, in order to determine job performance capabilities and to rule out communicable diseases. Provides assessment and care management to support Worker’s Compensation cases. Ensures all appropriate forms are completed in compliance with Employee Health policies, procedures, regulations and requirements. May perform return to work assessments in coordination with leave management to verify work limitations. Advises teammates with issues such as substance abuse, psychosocial needs, wellness/health promotion concerns and other health or work-related concerns. Utilizes the Employee Assistance Program to assist Associates with dependencies and/or other behavioral issues and stress. Responds appropriately to emergency situations. Applies principles of Standard Precautions, infection control and uses personal protective equipment or barriers to avoid risk of exposure from infectious materials to self and others. Follows aseptic techniques. Maintains accurate and confidential medical records. Develops, contributes to and delivers wellness materials and programs. May set up and coordinate Employee Health Services activities. Performs ergonomic assessments as needed. Serves as a resource and role model to teammates in support of a culture of wellness and the Human Resources Department. Keeps Director informed regarding concerns, pertinent information, progress and statistical information on patients. Is flexible in meeting various work schedules in order to meet departmental needs. Orders and stocks supplies, medications and vaccines as necessary. Works independently with minimal supervision. Participates in staff meetings, in-service programs, and other required programs.

Other information: Education BSN preferred. Licensure/Certification Current North Carolina RN licensure required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience required.
  • Experience in providing health education on an individual or group basis required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of health and wellness, occupational health, federal and state regulations, and CDC recommendations pertaining to Employee Health Services.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational health procedures and skilled with diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Proficient with MS Office and Epic/EMR, with the ability to learn new software rapidly.
Valid NC Driver’s License: No If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
